Linux kernel AFS (kAFS) Hackathon and BoF at USENIX Vault '19
AuriStor, Inc. is pleased to sponsor and invite AFS and Linux kernel developers to the second Linux kernel AFS (kAFS) Hackathon and Birds of a Feather meeting. The hackathon and BoF will be co-located with the USENIX Vault '19 - Linux Storage and Filesystems Conference.
Purpose
The hackathon provides a forum for AFS and Linux kernel developers to meet and collaborate on the development and production readiness of:
- AF_RXRPC, the implementation of the Rx RPC protocol available to kernel modules and userland processes via the socket interface. The Rx RPC protocol is used by AFS and AuriStorFS. Rx would make an excellent RPC for Internet of Things as well.
- kAFS, the Linux filesystem client implementation for AFS and AuriStorFS.
- kafs-utils. A suite of AFS management tools written in Python that make use of the AF_RXRPC userland socket interface.
The Birds of a Feather (BoF) meeting topic is: Justifying the inclusion of Linux kernel AFS in Enterprise Distributions. End-user organizations and representatives of Linux distributions are encouraged to attend to discuss legacy and future use cases for the world's first cloud filesystem, /afs.
The Linux kernel AFS implementation began development in 2002 but it has only become a viable replacement for out-of-tree AFS kernel modules beginning with the Linux 4.19 kernel. Linux kernel AFS is built as part of the Fedora Core 29 and Debian Buster Linux distributions. For more details on the current state of kAFS, AF_RXRPC, and kafs-utils, please see: www.infradead.org/~dhowells/kafs/
